Most plumbing call-outs in Accra start with a polytank that will not fill, or a pipe that will not stop.

Water reaches most Accra homes on the GWCL schedule, not yours. That is why nearly every house runs a polytank and a booster pump, and it is why so much plumbing work here is tank work. A float valve sticks and the tank spills all night. A pump runs dry and burns out. The pressure switch clicks on and off until somebody pulls the plug out of frustration. In Spintex, East Legon and Adenta the usual complaint is weak pressure upstairs while the ground floor is fine.

Older houses in Dansoman, Kaneshie and Abeka bring a different job. Soakaways and septic tanks sized for a smaller household start to back up, and the first warning is a bathroom that drains slowly once the rains begin. Burst PPR pipe is the other emergency, often where a hot line runs through a wall. Close the tank outlet valve before you call anybody. That costs you nothing and it stops the damage spreading while the plumber is still stuck on the road.

Settle the callout before the plumber sets off. In Ghana it typically runs GHS 50 to GHS 150, and many pros fold it into the final bill if you go ahead with the work. A small repair such as a tap, a joint or a washer sits at GHS 100 to GHS 400. A WC, mixer or water heater job lands nearer GHS 300 to GHS 900 in labour, plus the fittings. Re-piping and pump work are quoted on their own.
